2023-05-19

On June 8th, the Hugo de Vries Prize will be awarded to the person who defended the best thesis in the botanical field last year. The prize is an initiative of the KNBV and the Hugo de Vries Fund. The symposium will take place on Thursday, June 8th, 2023 in the afternoon at the Hortus Amsterdam (Plantage Middenlaan 2a).

Hugo de Vries was born on February 16th, 1848 in Haarlem and studied biology at Leiden University from 1866. In 1870 he obtained his doctorate with his research on the influence of temperature on plant roots. He became a professor of botany at the University of Amsterdam and was one of the three rediscoverers of Mendel's laws. This made him one of the founders of modern evolutionary biology. He worked for a long time in the Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam, so the Hugo de Vries Laboratory will be the setting for this jubilee symposium.
