How fungi helped plants to get on land

To get out of the water and conquer the land, plants needed the help of fungi. Last weekend, Dutch newspaper Trouw published an article about the relationship between plants and fungi, and how this relationship was indispensable for the plants to get from water to the land 450 million years ago.

You can read the full article (in Dutch) here. The article refers to a recent paper in Science, where researchers investigated how mutualist fungi may have helped the early plant lineages adapt to the new environment. See also the Perspective by MiCRop PI Harro Bouwmeester for more insights.

The topic was also picked up by Bionieuws (in Dutch).
