In a recent publication in the Journal of Chemometrics, Fred White from the MiCRop data team introduces PESCAR, a method for integrating multiple omics datasets. Applied to transcriptomics, metabolomics and metabarcoding data, PESCAR helped identify potential links between gene expression in plant roots, metabolite production and the recruitment of microbes.

Unlike purely exploratory approaches, PESCAR incorporates a research outcome of interest directly into the analysis. This makes it better able to detect subtle but biologically relevant patterns in complex multi-omics data, while retaining an interpretable view of the contribution of each dataset.
